Are You Tanaka?

Tanaka: Now that Toro is home, what do I do san?

Tanaka has been especially sweet to grandma when Toro was in hospital. He sat with her, played with her and talked to her for a whole week. Tanaka is usually not a kitty who is THIS affectionate, preferring his own space and activities to sitting with anyone for any longer than a few minutes at a time. Grandma and even Cousin R noticed his sudden change in behaviour when Toro was not about for the whole of last week. Yesterday though he made his presence known for a short time with the family and then went off again to sit by the window. I would have to see if he is still as outwardly affectionate as before when Toro is back home.

  1. When the more dominant cat is away, the shy cat will come out of its shell. But once the more dominant cat is back, the shy cat will retreat again.

From a book I read last month on cat behavior.

    Dear Toro

Glad to hear you are home. San is a terrific mama! I'm sure your previous owner will not know what to do.

  3. I believe the cat dynamics at home change when you have one cat vs several cats. One cat may be naturally affectionate, but with the presence of certain other cat(s), that one cat may not show their true affections, until that other cat(s) is absent.
