New Litterbox

This is the storage container that I am going to use as a litterbox for the boys. It measures 25 inches across and about 18 inches high on all sides. It is going to fit quite snugly in the bathroom but at least I would get less litter flying out from the 3 sides. I have taken the rollers off as I am not sure they would appreciate a moving latrine :)

They have taken turns examining it and have begun to ignore its presence. This is good as they do not feel threatened by the new big white box. I only need to cut out the door that would allow everyone to enter and exit easily. Probably I have to put some of that strong tape people use to cover wires on the newly cut edges so they don't get hurt when they use the new box.

Which means I have to lug it to work tomorrow so I can use some of the sharp stuff :)) at work to cut out the door. It should be okay. We will have to see what tomorrow brings. :)

  1. A portaloo with high walls sounds like a great idea. :)

I've been using baking trays for the convenience and cheap price... plus they're disposable after a while. But recently some cats are getting too heavy and they tip over the trays while using 'em. Finally got a "proper" litter tray last week. :P

  2. Spencer has been using baking trays for years...but the loo on wheels is a great idea! Must show us the finished product! Can patent it you know

  3. You guys are so handy with tools.

I'm just too lazy to do one up for them, plus the lack of creativity (this one mostly).

  4. Vegancat once suggested using a heated knife or something to slice through the plastic box.

I thought putting sticky tape may create a mess later (litter sand and hair getting stuck?). Perhaps you can file(use carpeter's file) the cut edges to make them smooth.

  5. You are right aunty_p. I didn't think about the sand and hair sticking on it. This is a real practical problem. My friend at work used a hacksaw to cut the door for the litter box. He had sandpapered the edges so it's not so sharp anymore. But I will take your advice and try to file it a bit. :))
It looks quite okay. I will put up the pics later :))

  6. Dear catdonna and cat_aunty. I tried the trays but it didn't work or maybe I bought the wrong ones. The sand keeps flying out and all that vigorous digging had I think they take great delight in tipping them over :)

So I bought the litter boxes and now have graduated to just one storage box. They are cheaper also. :)

  7. Dear kxbn

No lah. I am just desperate and I really hate having to clean up all the flying litter. :))

  8. have you thought of changing to pine litter? it would reduce the tracking and flying... but of course, that is, if the amigos are willing to use it. or another type that looks like oat flakes, also not bad... me using one litterbox for 6 cats, and except for occasional accidents (when i forgot to clean the litterbox), it is going on quite well.

  9. Dear ksn
Waahh..one litterbox for 6 cats! That is quite a feat. I have 2 litterboxes for 3 cats..hahaha. maybe I very kiasu ermm...or maybe I read too much of those cat manual books.

I have tried pine litter. It smells nice but then the pine would crumble into dust and then when I do not do litter duty rigourously, alamak... ;(

Then I use SWHEAT - wheat. Wahh very expensive and then sometimes got weevils. Once I caught Bujang staring at his litter and when I inspected it..WOAHHH weevils. You can't keep them for long.

So now I use JAPN - clay. The amigos like it. Bujang simply loves to dig in. Also its white and so looks very clean. I have learnt to keep the litter clean because if not Bujang will wail~~~~~.

There are no weevils here although I sometimes wonder why Bujang sometimes stares at his litter. He sometimes tries to bury the lure from his toy here too, so I keep it clean lah.

I think I should stop reading those cat books. They say 1 litter box for every cat + 1. Just have enough place for 2 , where got place for 3 + 1. Hahaha

  10. actually i only clean it twice a day.

and long ago i followed the instructions on the litter pack - put one inch or 2 inches of litter in the pan.. wah... 2 or 3 days later, stink like dunno what.

then i think i read in a controversial book or website, that the trick is really to put the bare minimum, or just enough, and clean often. not only it doesnt smell, i didnt have to waste!

also, what i do is to scoop the pee out (so fr pine, i scoop out those wet "clumps" that turn to dust) using a metal scoop, instead of those "holely" ones sold in petshops.

    it worked for me :)

  11. I finally chnaged the litter bins around. The storage bin for the old litter. I have given the boy's litter bin to akira. She likes her own bin in the kitchen bathroom. I think she doesn't like being surprised by Toro in the middle of business. The boys have yet to use the new bin. I hope it would hppen soon man! Not even pee-ing!

  13. It's a pity I didn't see this post earlier Vegancat. :) I could have been smarter about it so much earlier too and not pay so much for a pet bin that doesn't really work for my cats. I bought mine for $26.00. Some of the pet bins look very pretty but that's about it especially if you have big-boned cats like mine.
