Collar me down!

I had written before about Bujang's collar and his heart-shaped tag with the red and white crystals that I had bought for him last year. So I had finally gottten him to wear it around his neck. I thought if he looked like Elvis I would leave it but I think he looks more like Liberace. Hahaha. Poor Bujang would not even look at the camera. Added to this, it looked kind of heavy for him to have it around his neck for always. It really looked good on those cats at the site. They looked all regal and graceful-like. Maybe its the heart-shape that's the problem. Hmmm.... Anyway I have since removed the heart tag and he now wears something quite serviceable.

  1. Collars are nice, although I find they kind of cause obstruction when I stroke the cat or scratch under his neck and chest.

Hence, I leave the foster cat without a collar, which means I can't train them to walk on a leash. And body harness presents a challenge to most cats I know of - some of them cats stood still like in shock...don't know what to do, while the smarter cats will try all means to get that strange harness off their body. :)

  2. Once when I was at work, my mother frantically said that Bujang got out and she can't find him. Of course Bujang was just hiding some place. It struck me that if one of my cats got out, at least someone has the information to send him back home or to call me. So from then on, all of my cats have collars with the needed info. I have to take the collar off Toro when I brush him but that is all. Then he wears his collar back on and everything is as usual. :)

My cousin's cat once got out and they couldn't find her for a few days. They searched high and low and finally spoke to one of their upstairs neighbour. It seemed that the neighbour saw their cat (but didn't know it belonged to them) and had been feeding her. Thank goodness they got her back again. I don't know if they got a collar on her yet though.

But whatever it is, I thought it would stop me from worrying in case anything happens. I read all kind of horror that goes on the the lives of community cats at Vegancats site and some of them were too terrible to even contemplate. :(

  3. I agree, collars with ID tags are important. That why I was so cheesed off if they are stolen off my cats!!

The heart shaped pendant ok what, maybe Bujang is a he, so a bit weird loh

  4. Hahaha cat_aunty. You are right. Maybe because he's male so it looks very weird on him. And he is a big male cat- all 6.33 kg. A little bit like a wrestler trying to be cute. Hahaha.

  5. I agree that ID tag is useful, although I can't let my cat run out, otherwise, I'll have a hard time looking for them all over 25 storeys!

I put on the soft collar on Jackie yesterday and she seemed ok with it. I may add on a bell, coz she still hides under the bed or sofa when uncle S is at home. I wonder will she ever get over this? How to show her to potential adopters if she's always hiding?? :-S

ps: does the bell irritate your cats?

  6. No the bells don't irritate them at all. Choose a small bell. They sell a lot of bells at the pet store. Some bells are quite minute like about 10 mm and would stll sound when your cat runs around. The one that Bujang has here is rather big and quite noisy but he is used to it.

I started with a small bell then bigger ones come later. I think if the collar is 2 fingers spacing around the neck, the bell should hold quite snugly and would not inconvenience Jackie. I notoce when the collar hangs too loosely, they get irritated by the collar and then the bell.

Shy cats are really difficult to show like Akira. But I notice that if you hold a wand toy and just kind of play around with it around her casually, she will come out to investigate. Maybe Uncle S can try to do this - just casually play and not look at her and when she begins to come out, just still pretend to ignore her and see what she does next. We have tried this with Akira because she can be like a ninja and disappear under the covers when people come.

Also you can try to invite other cat lovers or relatives to try to entice her out like this. So when adopters come, they can entice her in the same way and then she will come out. The more people who play, maybe she will not be so shy. It took me some time with akira. She is less shy now and would actually come out to investigate if people pretend she is not about and don't go out of their way to touch her or anything. :))

  7. Thanks for the suggestion, San, will ask uncle S to try out. :)

I bought a new elasticised red collar for Jackie yesterday. The bell was a bit noisy, so I put a bit of magic tape to blunt out the tingling.

Jackie usually will come out of hiding when I call her, but I'm sure she will hide from visitors. Things are improving with uncle S in that she will hang around when uncle S is in (after I "covered up" the hiding places or close the door if she hides under our bed - then she'll clamour to be let out!). She may rub uncle S' legs if she thinks he has food, but otherwise, she will give him a wide berth by walking one big round to "siam" him. :P

  8. :)) I hope it works. I think once she plays with the toy, Uncle S can try to bring entice her out more and more and then in a few days can actually play with her with the wand toy.

The 3 amigos like Da Bird. I had written about this before. It's quite a fun toy with feathers at the other end. It flies through the air nicely. I think you can just sew some bits of feather boa on the end of a wand and coonect it with a bit of string. As long as it flies through the air naturally and snake about on the ground, I think it will work just as well.

The downside is once you get her going, she may want you to play with her all the time. The 3 amigos always wait for me to go near the toy cupboard or Toro would actually walk me there :))

I really hope it will work for jackie and Uncle S. :)

  9. Vegancat suggested a simple solution: for uncle S to give Jackie irresistible food! :) Guess I haven't tried this coz of his sometimes late hours.

  10. Oh yeah. :)) Food is always good. I think you would get kind of instantaneous resluts there. :))
I was thinking more of something that can be his alone so she makes a choice of what she wants to do. But quite time consuming lah.
